The embrasure of an artillery emplacement admits light to its darkened casemate on the lakefront walls of old Fort Pike, a Third System fortress built to defend the Rigolets Pass, between Lakes Ponchartrain and Bourne, just north of New Orleans, Louisiana. This old fort was constructed in the 1830's, and was occupied by a Confederate garrison until Union Admiral David Farragut's incursions up the Mississippi River drove Southern forces from New Orleans. Thereafter, Federal troops garrisoned Fort Pike.
